Terry Fox Walk

Today we had our Terry Fox walk. I was so pleased to see the excitement and concern for others shown by our students. Chants of "Go, Terry, go!" were heard all around the Hugh Beaton community today. We raised a lot of money with our "Toonies for Terry" and the children were inspired by Terry Fox's message of hope and determination. He taught us that we need to dream big and to believe in ourselves to make the world a better place. Terry left us 31 years ago, but his spirit lives on in our children.

  1. Dear Mrs. Jinks class,

Thank you for checking out our blog! We were excited to read your comments, and when we browsed through yours, we realized we shared several connections!

We also did the Terry Fox Run in September, and we walked around our school block for an hour. Some of us challenged ourselves to run once around -- it was about 1 KM. Learning about Terry Fox helped us realize that we can advocate in the fight against cancer, even as grade one and two students!

On your blog, we noticed you are reading "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", which is a book many of the grade one students remembered from last year! We also noticed that you go to school in Windsor, Ontario and we shared several connections having traveled through to cross the United States border.

Thank you for showing your appreciation for our Dot Day video -- we had a lot of fun exploring our school that day! We were able to watch your SmileBox video and reflected on how your art, which was very different than ours, was equally creative. We wondered what materials you used to create your masterpieces -- we guessed paint, crayons, and markers.

To answer your question about our favourite games, we LOVE 'soccer math" [http://www.math-play.com/soccer-math-adding-one-digit-numbers/adding-one-digit-numbers.html] and we play it often during our nutritional break. We noticed in your picture that your classroom has a SMARTboard just like ours -- what learning activities do you play?

Thank you again for checking out our class website and blog -- we look forward to connecting soon!

  2. Dear Ms. Horst and 1/2FI class,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. We have been looking for connections as well! We love our school Terry Fox Walk, as it is a way to honour Terry and any loved ones who have been touched by cancer. One classmate wore a pedometer and we had walked 2000 steps! Our DPA for the day!

We made a quick class book using "Boom, Chicka Boom", where we drew all the letters in our names on a coconut tree. Everyone loved decorating their own page. We used Mapquest to find Burlington, and to find our how long it would take us to drive there(3 hours!). We discussed how you are close to Hamilton/Toronto. We enjoy living so close to the States. Mr. Jinks works in the States along with many of our Moms and Dads. A lot of us like to go shopping there!

Mrs. Jinks was so impressed with your Dot Day Animoto that she has downloaded the app for us to use. We used Q-tips and puck paints to make our Dot-Day pictures. What app did you use on your ipads to make your dots?

We checked out the Soccer Math on Thursday afternoon. It was a great way to practice counting on, since many of us are new to addition. We like the abcya.com games like number bingo. Mrs. Jinks makes a lot of notebook games to practise our sight words. We can't wait to check out all the games you have linked on your blog- we tried quite a few!

We can't wait to check out your blogs again soon. Next time we will be able to comment on your kidblogs, and that will be even more fun!

    Your friends in Windsor,
    Mrs. Jinks and 1J
